Moscow’s metro system is pleased to announce the expansion of its innovative biometric payment system to include students. Now, over 550,000 students can enjoy a seamless and secure travel experience using facial recognition technology to pay for rides on the metro and Moscow Central Circle (MCC).

Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, Maksim Liksutov, highlighted the convenience and security of this advanced payment method: Biometric payment is a Russian-developed technology with bank-level security, ensuring all passenger data is encrypted. No cards, phones, or wallets are needed to pass through the turnstiles. In line with Mayor Sergey Sobyanin’s vision, we continue to integrate digital technologies into our city’s transportation network to enhance passenger comfort.
The biometric payment system is available across all metro and MCC stations, and select stations on the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD). Students can easily activate this service within their personal account on the “Moscow Metro” app. The app also provides convenient access to Moscow resident card linking, online pass purchases, and journey history tracking.
Since its launch in 2021, the biometric payment system has facilitated over 130 million journeys for nearly 400,000 passengers across Moscow’s public transport network. This latest expansion underscores Moscow’s commitment to providing cutting-edge, user-friendly solutions for its citizens.
